Take Care of Your Piano Rolls
By Luke Myers

Well, here goes. Today I was playing a "new" roll that I got,
"Keep the Home Fires Burning." Most of the roll was okay but,
when the second verse on the roll came into view, immediately
I knew it was completely un-repairable. It had disintegrated
into an un-playable tangle of paper.

(This roll was from a collection of rolls in an antique mall.
I actually own most of those rolls in that collection, now.
And the ones I got, were better than this one.)

This goes to show that one must keep a close eye on the tracking
of their rolls, lest the paper hangs itself on the side of a
flange and starts tearing. Also, keep the rolls in a slightly
moist (not wet) environment, to keep them from drying out and
self-destructing in the middle of playing.

"Here we go: 'Seventy-six trombones played the big... TEARRRR!'"
