Aging Impacts Mechanical Music Maintenance Field
By Robert McFeeters

This is a subject that is of interest to me as well. I will be 70
by the end of this year. I am a retired piano technician with 50-plus
years of servicing pianos, organs and both digital and pneumatically
operated player instruments. Two heart attacks in 2011 effectively
ended my daily working routine. Advancing arthritis has ended my
performing career as well.

So what's left? My knowledge and abilities. I am open to anyone who
would want to be an apprentice, and learn about the wonderful world
of mechanical music. It is _never_ too late to learn something new
if you have an open mind.

Tom Detweiler feels that young people today are only interested in
video games and the latest cell phones. I am also sure there is that
segment out there, but to say the majority of young people have no
interest, or don't know about these instruments, is not exactly true.

Check out the American Carousel Organs, Vintage Fair Organs, Mechanical
Music Parade and Musical Box Society International. All are groups on
Facebook. Search at Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and other Internet
social media and you will find a plethora of young people who _are_
interested in preserving these mechanical marvels.

There are also many right here on MMD. Al Good summed it up in his
last sentence, "But people continue to come and hear the organs play
and that makes it worth the effort."

I just made a significant modification to my own Pianocorder this year.
I will be posting all new videos on my YouTube page and my website.
There you can see what I am doing about aging. I may not be able to
actively do piano servicing, but I can and will share my abilities with
anyone who asks me.

My web page is http://www.lansdalepianotuning.net/ and my YouTube page
is https://www.youtube.com/user/lilbrobob2008/ Please feel free to
contact me. I would be very happy to speak with any one, regardless of
their age.
