Steinway XR "Ciphers" After Moving Piano

The same thing happened on my Steinway AR after a move. First, figure
out which tube it is into the stack and using a long tube, blow and
suck into the stack and see if you can free up the valve. Most likely
it's something stuck in the valve preventing it from closing.

If that doesn't work you'll have to drop the stack and clean out
the valve. If you are lucky it's on the top of the stack (1/3 chance).
If not, you'll have to disassemble one side of the stack and clean
out the valve. Disassembly is not for the faint of heart; best to
find a player piano tech who can do this for you.

Dropping the stack out and putting it back in is not difficult, so
if you can remove it yourself and take it to their shop it will save
everyone time. Just remember to label the 88 tubes, or carefully
photograph and remember how they are attached. If you don't have
a test roll you'll need one once you put it back together.

Good luck.
