It is with great sadness that we contact MMD to let the wider world
know of the passing of Shirley Nix on September 27th, 2016. We met
Frank and Shirley so long ago that neither one of us can remember how
many years the Nixes have been prominent in our lives. Shirley was
a member of both AMICA and MBSI. She served as Secretary/Reporter for
the local chapter of AMICA here in Southern California.
Shirley and Frank opened their home(s) and enormous collection of
beautifully restored mechanical music machines to not only the MBSI
and AMICA but also to many other groups and organizations, who until
meeting the Nixes had no idea what a "music box" or an "orchestrion"
was. If you have ever had the pleasure of enjoying one of these
meetings at the Nixes you know of their collection and hospitality.
If you only knew Shirley from attending MBSI or AMICA meetings at
their home you could be assured of a great time listening to the
carefully collected items in their collection, and as you walked from
one building to the next you likely heard Frank's booming voice in
the background shouting, "Don't walk on the lawn, use the walkways!"
Shirley was one of the hardest working people we have ever met: she
quietly and efficiently "got it done." From the point of view of the
mechanical music world it is a great loss, but even more so for those
of us who relied on the quiet strength of this "very reliable" lady
to keep on "just getting it done." We will miss her greatly, and we
extend our heartfelt condolences to Frank and entire Nix Family.
