Ampico A "Play" Switch is Unstable
By John Grant

My comments in MMD 20160929 in response to Bill Chapman's
Ampico "A" issue with the transmission shifter not remaining
reliably in the "Play" position contains a slightly misleading
statement that I would like to clarify.

My fourth point that spoke to adjustment of the Rewind brake to
help minimize tearing during reroll is a separate thought and
actually has nothing to do with Bill's issue. This brake, which
consists (usually) of a pot metal disk and spring loaded friction
pad is not engaged during Play and therefore does not contribute
to the transmission not staying in Play. In fact, it could be
completely absent and the Play function will be unaffected.

The only problem it could cause if maladjusted (in addition to
contributing to the tearing of rolls) would be to tend to push the
transmission out of the Rewind position, _not_ the Play Position.

Likewise, the "drag brake" attached to the supply spool spindle
("Play brake") would have little, if any effect on the transmission
"slipping out of gear" as it does not develop a force acting in
a direction to do so.
