Seek Baldwin Modelo Spool Box Transmission
By Chris Gudgel
Good morning, I'm afraid I have found myself in quite a quandary.
I have a customer's Modelo Baldwin player piano in my shop with the
transmission in about seven pieces. I have tried several things to
try and repair it, and I'm sure you're aware that won't work.
I have several stacks here that I have looked at in order to maybe
put on a different spool box and transmission setup but I'm afraid
I'm just not clever enough to get it to all work.
I need this transmission in order to be able to repair this player
piano properly. It is a very nice piano; both the piano and the player
stack have been restored very nicely. Someone did a really nice job.
It pains me greatly that we cannot find this transmission. If anyone
has one of these transmissions that was built between 1915 and 1920
I would really like to speak with them.
These folks would really like to have their piano back and I just can't
see a way to fix it without this original transmission. I have already
been warned by several player piano technicians who are quite well
known that my search is most likely futile; however, I just can't give
up. It's my understanding that this particular transmission was used
on pianos between 1915 and 1920.
If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears. These people had a budget and
we've sailed right past that and I'm working for free now which is okay
if we can get the piano fixed.
Keep in mind I do know the obvious answers like junk it or burn it and
that just isn't going to happen; I don't need any more of that. If
there is any constructive help out there I really would appreciate it.
Thank you,
Chris Gudgel
