Wurlitzer 103 Number 4330 Dated Sept. 18, 1937
By Paul W. Harris
The organ roster from the 1985 MBSI rally in Fremont, Ohio, made for
some interesting reading. It brought back a lot of memories since
I was able to attend that rally. It was truly a great rally. Thanks
to Tim Wagner for making it available [160812 MMDigest].
I did notice, however, that one entry in the roster contained some
probable misleading information and I wanted to correct this error.
Item #53 in the roster lists a Wurlitzer 103 organ which at the time
was owned by Bob and Sharon Fortune. The entry claims that it is the
last style 103 built by Wurlitzer and was shipped from the factory on
April 22, 1937. No serial number is given.
The Wurlitzer 103 which I own is serial number 4330 and, according to
the information I obtained from Doyle Lane's Wurlitzer factory records,
was shipped from the factory to Lilio Distributing Co. in New York on
September 18, 1937
In addition, when I recovered the vacuum reservoir I discovered the
date "September 7, 1937" inscribed on the paper sealing the upper leaf
of the bellows. This strongly suggests that my instrument is probably
the last 103 made by Wurlitzer. I believe that this organ never saw
service at an amusement park, since several folks I talked to at the
1985 rally remembered seeing the organ in its shipping crate.
My organ is the one pictured on page 94 of Ron Bopp's book. It is
still playing with original leather and four-in-one metal valve blocks.
