Testing Pouch Leather Sealants

I look forward to John Tuttle's leather sealant tests.  Craig Smith
ran a series of pouch-sealant tests several years back, and that MMD
article may be of interest:

I never did get an answer to my basic question, "What leathers need to
be sealed," referring specifically to pouches.  Were they all sealed?
If not, how do you know when to do it?
