Seek Soft Pedal for Schiller Player Piano
By Larry Schuette

I am presently working on restoring a small 1928 Schiller upright
player representing some ingenuity toward the end of the player piano
era. The piano is missing the square ended brass soft pedal and Schaff
Piano Supply Co. does not have a replacement. The measurement of this
pedal is 6-1/8-inch from center of shaft to the back of the brass pedal.

I am offering $50 delivered if anyone has such a pedal available.
If someone has a different style of pedals (rounded pedal fronts),
I would consider replacing both pedals. The measurement of the sustain
pedal is 8-3/4-inches from center of shaft to back of pedal.

This piano has some unique features not seen on earlier Standard
actions. It has a brass plate bragging about the unique abilities
of this piano which reads

  "STANDARD ARTIST - RECORD ACTION
is specifically constructed to play any make of reproducing
or regular music roll with transposer lever at normal."

Of course it plays only 80 notes so someone in the factory decided
to make use of some of the unused upper and lower pouch/valve systems
to operate the soft bass bellows, soft treble bellows, sustain bellows
and rinky-tink bellows to avoid the extra expense of those devices
needing their own pouch/bellows system. So rather than having playing
pneumatics attached to four of these unused pouch/valve systems, they
attached ports with hoses running to power the four devices.

The sustain gets its signal direct from the tracker bar whereas the
other three are operated by push buttons and connecting hoses. Another
unusual feature is the brass tracker bar has 85 holes so the bottom two
and top three holes are not connected to anything.

I have always been amused that Gulbransen and now Standard bragging
about an 80 note player as being something special. We all know it
saved them production costs.
