Are player pianos a waste? Absolutely not! The idea which some
people undoubtedly have, that player pianos are only "for parties
where one drinks wine" or "only for lazy people," is pretty foolish.
I have been told by an anonymous source to the effect that "player
pianos (the pneumatic kind) will be around forever, and that a player
piano is a big waste and bother to get and maintain, so don't worry."
The same source has also given me the impression that player pianos
aren't really that cool, they're just big space-takers and don't give
any enjoyment.
Due to the countless pneumatic player pianos for sale in the States,
offered on Craigslist (mostly) and on eBay, it goes to show that the
player piano is far from dead, and that it is still a part of history
that should be preserved. If I had my way, I would love to open a
museum and workshop with several working players, that persons could
play without fear of being told not to or that it was a sin to do so.
Player pianos a waste? No sir! Just what did millions of Americans
get fun from, during the early 1900s-1940s? Not GameBoys! Not iPods!
They got this entertainment from the wonderful instrument that we all
know as the player piano, and _they_ certainly didn't think it was
a waste!
