Technology of Fashion Design and Piano Rolls
By Joyce Brite
Last week, fashion designer Zac Posen appeared on The Late Show with
Stephen Colbert to talk about a dress that he had designed for Claire
Danes for the Met Gala. This much talked-about creation used a fabric
that had fiber optics woven into it which make the dress glow in the
dark.
Posen described the process used to create this fabric by referring
to the process used to make jacquard fabrics, and then, he told how
that technology was used to make "music punch cards on the roll."
He didn't quite say "piano rolls" but at least he understood the
technology.
It's not often that roll-making technology gets mentioned on a national
television program!
