Unknown Piano Roll JB002 "Castanets"
By Robbie Rhodes
Unknown piano roll JB002 "Castanets" -- What's the name of the song,
and what firm made the piano roll? It sounds like an aggressive
Spanish gypsy dance (a fandango?) played with castanets, as for
example in "Capriccio Espagnol" by Rimsky-Korsakov.
The unknown piano roll is believed to be perforated by the FilMusic
Company of Hollywood. It is missing the leader and almost the first
half but what remains seems to be a repeat of the complete piece.
The product could be an anonymous FilMusic "Picturoll" or else it
could be a FilMusic POP ("Popularoll") with a valid composer and artist
credit on the label; it's hard to say.
Could it be by 1920s Los Angeles theatre organist Chauncey Haines?
The music sure is lively!
