Jim Wells, Mechanical Music Collector
By Lee Munsick
Congrats on the fine job you do; I hope you keep it up for a long
time. You may know I sell (or try to) on eBay from over 50 years of
collecting in many fields including mechanical music. I have a lot
of photos up now to do with calliopes -- a whole bunch of them!
Today in my boxes from storage I found an article about Jim Wells, who
was an active member of AMICA and MBS, and a marvelous, true character.
Many years back he bought the huge Nipper trademark from atop the
Baltimore distributor for RCA. There were a few others atop other such
firms elsewhere. Your MMD Archives show about a huge auction of his
stuff in 1977.
I am wondering if subsequently there was an obituary or other note of
his passing. I can't find him online. If he somehow still lives I'd
like to get in touch -- a true character! If you'd like to publish an
excerpt from all this, I will certainly appreciate it!
Many thanks again for all you do!
