Passing of Don Rand, "Collector's Classics"
By Chuck Sorensen
Thank you to Rusty King and others for their thoughts about Don.
Don and I were at Burbank High School together when he introduced me
to the wonders of player pianos and other automated music machines.
In the early 1960s we spent part of two summers in Las Vegas, Nevada,
working on the music machine collection of a fellow whose company
repaired mechanical slot machines and manufactured Keno games. The
owner had some type of break-down rifle in a violin case and he paid
us in, not too many, crisp $100 bills. We learned how to make the slot
machines pay off every time -- with their cases off. :>)
I have no doubt that I was included in those trips by Don mainly
because I had a 1956 Buick that could get us to and back from Las Vegas.
Yes, Don was very artistic in many areas; a fun friend to have.
