After reading Doug Bullock's article in 160215 MMDigest, I forsook
my past position on using any kind of rubber coating for "repairing"
pneumatic cloth that has leaks in it. This is the worst thing you can
do to the cloth. Doug Bullock is absolutely right on target; this is
one of the statements that he said, with which I completely agree:
> Someone has to go to extra work to get all that sealant gunk off
> before they can recover your pneumatics when you finally do the
> required restoration. Recovering pneumatics is such a minor job
> for one experienced in such that it is only a few hundred dollars
> to have done professionally.
Any rubber coating, be it Plasti-Dip, Flex-Seal, or other, will
stiffen the old cloth to a point at which, though it may in fact be
airtight, the suction from the bellows unit simply cannot pull the
pneumatic down, no matter how hard the person pumps. Applying extra
rubber coating is a sure-fire way to completely ruin that cloth.
The easiest way out is to get brand new cloth and recover all the
pneumatics. That is what I am doing right now. My player will
probably play better than it ever has, after the process is finished.
