Free running governor in musical box
Neil Scragg is having problems with his musical box restoration.
The first thing to say is that you should never use grease on any
part of a musical box mechanism. Very light oil, and almost none
of it, is all you should use.
The degree engagement of the endless and driving gear is very
important. More engagement makes the action easier. This may seem
counter-intuitive, but if you think about what is actually happening
here from a force and friction point of view you will understand.
Other details of his question are best discussed face to face with
the owner and box. I suggest Neil should seek out knowledgeable
musical box collectors and restorers and talk to them in person.
The easiest way to do this is to become an active member of The Musical
Box Society of Great Britain [MBSGB].
Sincerely,
Nicholas Simons - Correspondence Secretary, MBSGB
