Passing of Arnold Neuhaus, "The Piano Man"
By Kevin Helinski

Arnold H. Neuhaus, known as "The Piano Man" of Southeast Wisconsin,
passed away unexpectedly on February 10, 2016, at age 92. He owned
and operated Arnold Neuhaus Player Pianos in West Allis, Wisconsin,
for many years.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published a nice feature obituary which
pretty well tells his story:

He was also featured recently on a local television station:

He was a fixture at the big Wally Rank antique auto show for many years
with his orchestrion. He worked with player pianos for over 60 years
and the knowledge he took with him is immeasurable.

Hopefully I learned a little something watching him work on players
the last 10 or so years. I rebuilt my Solo Apollo at his shop under
his instructions and it worked great right from the start. I first met
him when I was a kid in the early 1970s when my parents had him rebuild
their player. My sister has it now and it still plays fine.

He had recently moved his business very near my house and when I decided
to rebuild my piano I stopped in to say hi as it had been quite a few
years since I had seen him. He still remembered our piano and what
player was in it even after all them years.

After that I enjoyed many Saturdays going for lunch with him and then
heading over to the shop to work on my piano and also help him with
little projects. It still amazes me -- his natural mechanical
knowledge, making rinky tinks, automatic shutoffs, suction boxes and
the like.

He had many pianos that he rebuilt 40 or 50 years ago come back through
the shop because the owners either passed away or had to downsize and
they all still played beautifully. He still worked right up until the
end and had no shortage of rebuilding jobs come in.

Hopefully his son Tom keeps the tradition going there. He will be
missed greatly around here.

Kevin Helinski
