Electrified Music Box Hums Badly
By Art Bilski

Some time in the past I picked up a Euphonia 55 music box. When
I purchased it, I knew the original spring was gone and someone had
electrified it. Looking for an original mechanism is impossible.

The motor was bound so I took it out, oiled the motor and lightly
cleaned the gears. While the tines sound beautiful, I am getting
a nasty "hum" where the spiral on the motor shaft meets the gear.
Removing the motor shows that the motor itself hums loudly because
of the high rotation speed.

I am at a loss on how to quiet this "hum" or where to focus my
energies. I have almost 20 discs so I do not want to scrap this.
Anyone have any thoughts?

[ Replace the AC motor with a DC motor; DC doesn't hum. -- Robbie
