As Don Teach's recent post mentioned, Wurlitzer APP rolls from the
1920's through 1930's are a mixture of QRS masters and Wurlitzer's own
in-house arrangements. There is no way to tell by looking at the roll,
its number, or the vintage which arrangements you will get. Some rolls
are all Wurlitzer, some all QRS, and most a random mixture of the two.
Tune heritage is only revealed by playing!
Most Wurlitzer APP roll enthusiasts view the Wurlitzer arrangements as
far superior. Even though the QRS masters were usually transcriptions
of hand-played rolls, the Wurlitzer drafting-board versions sound very
different, much like their band organ arrangements. Further, Wurlitzer
mostly only activated the APP bell (and rare xylophone) register with
its signature upper octave bell tremolo, on their own arrangements.
As Don also mentioned, nobody is presently recutting APP rolls or
offering new APP music -- but that's about to change! It has been
nearly 50 years since TRT Manufacturing produced the last new APP roll.
In the next few weeks, MMD will see the formal announcement of two
newly arranged 10-tune long frame APP rolls by talented young
arrangers. Roll 30401 will feature period popular tunes arranged
exactly as Wurlitzer did in the late 1920's. Roll 30402 will be a
special hand-played Jimmy Blythe and Clarence Johnson transcription
roll, with tunes mostly new to coin piano rolls.
They are both absolutely terrific! 5-tune changer versions of those
rolls will also be available by subscription. If that's not enough,
a recut project of never before recut Wurlitzer 5-tune changer rolls
will be available by subscription.
All of the above will be limited to one perforator run. Email me for
more information and to be on the offering list. Or wait for the MMD
announcement with full information in about two weeks.
