Taking a step back, I agree with leaving the MMDigest the way it is
for those that enjoy it in it's current state (I still enjoy it too).
Jody and Robbie do a fantastic job getting this to us every day.
I am not trying to undercut their work or service to the community,
just trying to brainstorm ways to improve it (and possibly create
more web traffic). I, however, think that again, as a supplement,
the MMD could possibly benefit from a forum-based service. It would
certainly help with for-sale or want ads!
I use forums extensively for automotive, computer gaming, and music;
Pianophilia is an example of a great community and excellent resource
for finding piano sheet music. I ask to those of the MMD, is it that
much different or harder to navigate to a search box and enter a
keyword or author that you're looking for information on?
Because of the cost of DSL at the time, I was forced to use dial-up
service until 2005, but even back before then I was part of several
forum communities and actively posting. The way they made it accessible
to all connections was to use thumbnail previews of images that you
could click on if you wished to load. Text is text; it's not that
large of a download.
A forum may also provide a much needed break for Jody and Robbie, by
appointing multiple moderators, it could make sure topics stay on point
and civil. My highlight and promotion of Facebook in particular was
meant to illustrate the fluidity of conversation and community aspect,
not promote it's use as an archive. There's no need to archive a
forum, if you are looking for something you can search at the top for
whatever that might be.
Tom Binnall is right, "If it works, don't fix it". But why not add to
it? Don't stick your head in the sand and hope things stay the same.
