Ami Rivenc lever wind cylinder music box, 10 airs
Rivenc boxes are usually robust sounding (i.e., loud!) but overall
very pleasing. The tune list has most of the popular tunes that people
could recognize.
I'd suggest that Mr. Katz try to _listen_ to the music box to see if he
likes the sound before buying it. Just because it has songs you like,
doesn't mean it has a _sound_ that you like. All cylinder boxes have
their own 'personality' and you want your ears to like the sound of the
individual box.
Hopefully he can contact the seller to listen to it. Don't try to
listen to it over a cell phone or other mobile phone -- it will sound
like it's under water! You both need a landline to hear it, and even
at that you won't hear most of the bass notes. Phones weren't meant to
pick up bass notes.
Since most of the songs are pretty commonly known, make sure they make
sense musically. If it doesn't, you could have lots of bent pins or
the cylinder might be out of register.
If you like the sound then you have to make the guy an offer. If you
can find out what ballpark he's in, that would be helpful, as he might
be trying to retire off selling one box! Ask if there's a deadline as
to when he's going to decide to sell it; he might just be fishing to
see how much he can get, then not sell it.
The box obviously has not been serviced in forever, so you might want
to consider that. To make the box sound as it did originally, you'll
have to get it restored. No one can quote a restoration price without
seeing the box.
Good luck!
