I read with interest Lester Wolff's story about what Mike Kitner
overheard ["Duo-Art at Asa Packer Mansion in Pennsylvania" in
160107 MMDigest]. I have had similar experiences but, while the
first reaction is to grin, this is really a serious subject.
There is a responsibility, as museum tour guides, to educate the
public and kill crazy stories with real facts. Continued interest
in mechanical music is involved in the education process.
A museum tour guide has the duty to keep the story factual, as nearly
as the best knowledge available allows. "Truth in Presentation" is
part of the Code of Ethics required by the American Association of
Museums for all accredited museums. Also, the guide should not accept
personal tips; they all go to the museum.
Sorry if this rant sounds pedantic, but this topic touched a sore spot!
