Adjusting the edge guides on a Simplex player unit
Being a newbie to the MMD, I have not fully honed my search skills so
please forgive me if this has been answered numerous times in the past.
I am still coming up-to-speed on terminology, which really helps when
doing a search.
I own a 1924 Conway player which has a Simplex unit. Most searches
I have done outside of the MMD would suggest that the left edge guide
should just lightly brush the roll edge. My player is not set up that
way; in fact, when I insert the roll I need to move both edge guides
outwardly so the paper will slide between them.
I realize that the Simplex uses a mechanical tracking mechanism and
I understand the principal of operation, but I am hesitant to make any
adjustments until I hear from some experts as to how I should proceed
(or even if I should).
For the most part my rolls track fairly well, but I find myself making
fine adjustments as some rolls are playing. I also notice that the
supply roll constantly oscillates left and right throughout the entire
roll, even if the roll is brand new and has perfectly straight edges.
The wood block spanning the friction wheel tends to lightly grab and
then release which causes the lever shift wire cord to wrap and lightly
activate then release. This whole process is subtle and maybe normal,
but I would think that with a perfectly straight paper edge that the
friction wheel would remain in a rested position until an adjustment is
required.
I have received some excellent support and advice on my player so far
and I look forward to help with this concern, or maybe just pointing me
to a step-by-step procedure for the Simplex. I have read (and re-read)
the following article by John Tuttle but can't seem to find the answer
I am looking for: http://www.player-care.com/simplex-tracker.html

[ I believe it is normal for the Simplex mechanical tracking system
[ to be continually seeking. Some pneumatic tracking systems with
[ adjustable edge-sensing "ears" also can be set up in this manner.
