In 2004 I helped find a new home for the Hudson's Schulmerich
Carillon. It was the largest instrument of its type built and could
be played from a keyboard, 30-note music rolls and sur plat discs.
It played hourly chimes and had a provision for announcing the weather
with appropriate sur plat discs, with weather themed tunes. The roll
player or keyboard were used for more extended concerts to the blocks
around the store, from 20-plus stories up.
There was directional control of the loud-speakers; for instance,
a control allowed a concert to Windsor, Ontario, Canada, along their
waterfront on the Detroit River by using all the speakers aimed
their direction. The coloured lighting for the top of the spire for
the weather forecast was apparently a separate control unit.
It was a hurried removal in advance of the building being imploded
for demolition. In the frenzy to get it out, two rolls got left in
a different storage area than the rest of the unit. They are unique
extra-wide rolls made for this instrument. I would appreciate being
contacted by the current owner to help reunite the rolls with the
instrument. At the time I was involved, there were four rolls with it.
This is the MMD post about it being available in 2004. Contact me
directly as the addresses in the 2004 MMD post are out of date.
