In my previous suggestions on how to deal with governors that need
attention on antique music boxes, I neglected to explain the method I
use to reduce the tension on the spring.
We have successfully used this technique for the better part of thirty
years with no problems. We have an air compressor, and after the comb
has been removed, we blow air across the governor fins until the spring
is completely wound down. Using a low stream of air, it may take up to
five minutes, but in the end it works like a champ. If you do not have
a compressor, you can buy a can of compressed air at any electronics
store or even at Home Depot.
To ensure that the spring is completely without tension, simply lift
the winding handle and it will be very obvious. If there any comments
or questions, I can be contacted at 310 541-4100.
