Material for Standard Valve Guides
By S. Lee Walker

Here is some information about replacing the original red fiber valve
guides on the Standard player action double valve system.

The quick fix -- go to Lowe's building supplies and go to the kitchen
cabinet section. Look in the counter-top area for samples of Formica
colors. They're free. Then go over to the hardware section and look
for Hillman Nylon Spacer H-880426, 3/16" x .115" x 1". Or go to
Hillman's on-line parts (they stock this size in long lengths):

Formica is .035" thick and it's easy to machine, drill and is
structurally strong. You can duplicate the original by using it as
a pattern.

Size the center hole so as to get a press fit for the Nylon bushing.
Nylon is not easy to machine, so cut it with a metal saw and then file
to length. You can leave 1/32" for glue. I glued two sheets together
for increased strength at 0.070" thick.

If you went to see the samples I made request an Email; I will send
photo attachments.
