Music Box Comb Doesn't Match the Cylinder
By Tony Ciuffini
I have read several suggestions to fix this problem; let me offer what
I believe is the solution. We have worked with Swiss music movements
for the last 30+ years and this Thorens looks authentic in every way.
I am assuming from the looks of the parts that this 28-note comb does
fit the cylinder; with that I offer the following:
The cylinder has been moved to the left on the center rod some time
during its history. When the cylinder is moved to the right about an
eighth of an inch on the shaft, the comb will line up with the pins.
The distance between the end of the cylinder on the right and the upper
right that holds the center shaft is too large. When they made these
movements the distance between the end of the cylinder and its upright
the center point was no more than an eighth of an inch.
I suggest you take the cylinder off and, holding the cylinder wrapped
with a piece of rubber or cloth so the pins are not pushed, gently tap
end of the shaft to see if it moves the cylinder to the right. If it
does, continue tapping until there is enough room for the comb to line
up with the pins on the cylinder.
This morning I read the additional comments on MMD and Don Teach
also believes it is the cylinder that has moved. Finally, it is not
advisable to alter the comb in any way nor to use adhesives or false
screw heads.
I would be happy to offer any additional advice if the above does not
work. You can call me at 1-310-541-4100.
