Hi MMD, In the ten plus years I've been producing piano roll repair
tables I've had numerous requests to produce a roll repair table that
would accommodate rolls other than standard 11-1/4-inch piano rolls of
up to four inch diameter.
This need became more apparent when over the last couple years
I acquired machines that use style A, G, 4X and O rolls. These rolls
are up to five inches in diameter and fortunately are of the same width
as standard 88-note rolls. These large [long playing] "10-tune" rolls
will not fit on the roll repair table that we produce now.
I have had several discussions with the machinist who presently makes
the tables on how best to approach this problem. We both believe this
is best approached by designing an attachment that fits on the present
tables. This avoids designing a completely new table. A possible
problem lies with different cardboard core sizes that are found; style
"O", for example, is about 4 inches and others are about 3 inches.
Some questions for other readers:
1) How much interest is there in a roll repair table that will handle
"10-tune" rolls?
2) How many instruments actually take these large "10-tune" rolls?
3) Is there interest in designing the attachment to fit Wurlitzer 125
and 150 rolls or other types not mentioned? The big constraint is the
roll width. The present table is designed for 11-1/4-inch-wide music
rolls.
Some interesting statistics: The first tables were produced in 2005;
since then 132 have been made and sold. We had a several year hiatus
and since restarting production 28 more have been made. Remarkably,
we have yet to receive the first complaint. I even had one man tell me
he was putting his table in his will!
I want to extend a profound thanks to Robbie and Jody for allowing me
to list these over the years. Without MMD these tables would have died
years ago.
A sincere thanks,
Tom Hutchinson
