This Thursday evening, October 29th, at 10:00 P.M. Eastern time, the
radio show "Ragtime America" will feature the first of two one-hour
shows about the development of player pianos, piano rolls and their
impact on ragtime. The second show will air on Thursday, November 5th.
The host, Jack Rummel, and I will discuss and feature some of the
greatest ragtime and early jazz performances recorded on piano and
nickelodeon rolls. Recordings will feature such ragtime luminaries
as Pete Wendling, Charlie Straight, Edythe Baker and Gertrude Baum.
We'll also highlight some of the early jazz piano that was influenced
by ragtime, particularly Southside Chicago jazz.
While most of the recordings will be from 88-note rolls, some will
feature reproducing roll performances by the Original Piano Trio,
Felix Arndt and Carl Rennecke (an excerpt). The show will also cover
some of the earlier arranged rolls as well as the latest Yamaha
Disklavier technology. Current transcriptions from player piano and
nickelodeon rolls will also be featured.

Or, you can listen the old fashioned way -- over the airwaves -- on KGNU,
Boulder, Colorado, 88.5 FM and 1390 AM.
A big thanks goes out to Jack for recognizing the importance of this topic
and spending the time to develop a show on a sometimes under-appreciated
area of ragtime recordings.
