Music Rolls for Player Calliope
By Don Teach
To my knowledge a special "A" roll just for calliope use was never
made. The calliope rolls were typically 58-note music rolls and the
different makers of calliopes just tubed their calliope to play all
the notes in the roll by teeing the missing notes to the next highest
note for bass pipes or next lowest note for treble notes, "next"
meaning the next octave up or down.
Although some original old rolls may say "Calliope" on the label they
are actually piano rolls just relabeled. A-102X was a roll cut in
recent years that may or may not have been a roll made from several
old rolls, giving it a tune line up of known tunes to the cutter of
the roll.
The only 32-note calliope roll I know of is the one that Arthur
Reblitz arranged several years ago for calliope use. It has shown
up at Internet sites a couple of times. Most of the calliopes that
were sold in the 'Twenties were of the forty-four note variety.
