Polishing a Musical Box Cylinder
By Tony Ciuffini

[ Ref. 151007 MMDigest, Cleaning & Adjusting a Swiss Musical Box ]

Jim Patrick wrote a nice thank you to everyone contributing to his
successfully getting his governor and music box working. It would
still be worth it for a professional to go through it to make sure
everything is okay.

Jim asks and thinks there is no way to successfully polish the
cylinder. During every one of our restorations we routinely polish
the cylinder. We use a Baldor 332B three-quarter horsepower 1800 RPM
heavy-duty industrial buffer. We use a buffing wheel with tampico
fiber that are available through Nancy Fratti.

We use a brass polish manufactured by Wrights. The polish is spread
on the cylinder, allowed to dry and then buffed with the buffer. This
may take several applications and when complete there is a beautiful
brass polished cylinder. There is no damage to the pins on the
cylinder. To date we have not added anything to the cylinder once
it is buffed.
