Early Duo-Art Grand Plays Poorly After Transport
By Scott Currier
Here is a plea for help to those of you who know Duo-Arts better
than I (which would be most of you, if I were to venture a guess...).
I recently bought an early (1916-ish) Aeolian Grand with Duo-Art.
The piano was playing fine before pickup, and now after delivery
(I watched to make sure the movers did not rest it on the stack)
it can not strike notes well. The electric motor and pump seem to
be running fine.
It seems to be getting plenty of suction to the wind motor and
tracking mechanism which are responding fine, although rewind does
not engage (but replay is working fine). No major hoses appear to be
off or loose. There is one 1/8" rubber line hanging down from between
the motor and pump (which I can not spot a nipple to connect to).
If I put it in non-Duo-Art mode, and I hold the solo and treble loud
levers, it will softly play some notes.
Am I not getting enough suction to the stack? I don't hear any loud
leaks. Or is some type of bypass/soft/expression system jammed or
not functioning?
I realize this is almost impossible to diagnose without having hands
on, but I was hoping the symptoms would sound familiar to someone
willing to point me in the right direction before I tear into it.
I last worked on Duo-Arts and Ampicos back in the 1970s, so I've
forgotten more than I probably ever learned! Any help is greatly
appreciated.
