Wurlitzer IX Tubing Connections
By Don Teach

[ Ref 150717 MMDigest, Seek Wurlitzer IX Tubing Chart

I have never seen a tubing diagram for a Wurlitzer IX. These pianos
were made over a long period and several mechanical changes were made
over the years. Start with a tracker bar scale and tube up the notes.

In one version there is a unit with opposing pneumatics moving a slide
to turn on and off the sustain pedal, and another set to work the soft
pedal mandolin.

In a second version they control the on-off function with valves on the
stack that are tubed to a little unit mounted on the left end of the
stack that has two pouches in it -- one pouch for sustain and one for
soft mandolin.

The roll changer has a large pneumatic on the left side that is
used when the roll rewinds to control the pneumatic in the accumulator.
As the roll rewinds and comes off the take-up spool, the changer opens
the pneumatic to cancel any credit on the accumulator. When a roll is
playing then a valve on the stack has the necessary vacuum to otherwise
control the pneumatic in the accumulator. During rewind there is no
vacuum in the stack so the pneumatic on the left of the changer has to
provide the vacuum.

Flap type valves are used to control the direction of the vacuum in
this unit. There is a blueprint showing the little pouches on the left
side of the stack and how to tube them. I don't have it but it exists
so someone can send a scan of it to MMD. That is basically how the IX
can be tubed, assuming it is a complete machine.
