Trade Carillon Control Program for Music Files
By Spencer Chase
I have had a Maas Rowe carillon for a number of years. Originally it
was driven with punched Mylar rolls, completely electro-magnetically.
I converted it to MIDI control but never did much with it since then.
I have recently resurrected the project and added a medium-power
amplifier and a weatherproof horn speaker. When I first got the
thing I wrote a simple program to schedule MIDI files to play on the
carillon. It used text files with time and file references in it to
play a repeated program every day.
Since then I have been working on the program some and have converted
it into an easier-to-use graphical Windows program. You can select
from any number of configuration files to play different programs and
can also drop any MIDI file into the program to play immediately. I'm
not sure if I have all the capabilities working without the possibility
of crashing the system but I do want to make it pretty much crash proof
when I have time to improve it.
My carillon is just 25 notes, F3 to F5, so it is a bit of a challenge
to arrange music for it, especially with my limited "arranging skills."
I would be interested in exchanging musical arrangements for the work
I have done. This includes the carillon program and information as to
how to convert an old electromechanical carillon or rank of chimes into
a scheduled carillon player.
