Does Music Box Disc Material Affect the Tone?
By Ralph Schultz
Additional tones and sounds coming from a disc player disc
I guess I have to put my two cents worth of information into the
question of the 'tone' of a zinc disc verses the steel. I thought
about it for a while and then decided to take my very small sounding
board box that I use for tuning purposes, play a zinc disc holding
the sounding post against the disc and the sounding board against
the sounding post.
Well, there was a little sound coming through but I then repeated
that procedure with the steel disc and I could hear the music more
pronounced -- nothing loud, but it is there.
I also held my fingers on the disc while it was playing and I could
feel the vibrations of the music, but also more pronounced on the steel
disc. The sound seemed to me more from the lower or bass section then
the higher notes and I think that would be normal. I think that much
of the sound is being transmitted from the front and back, where the
support wheels are, but sympathetic sounds also play a factor in it.
All combined, there is a sound coming from the disc as indicated by
the vibrating disc. If this makes a difference in sound, my ears sure
can't prove it.
Happy listening.
