At the Old Songs Festival this past weekend I heard a band called
"Rare Spirits" that did a whole set of songs related to the temperance
movement and prohibition in the US. They are actively seeking
additional material and as I talked with them after the show it seemed
to me that there should be an abundance of such material in both piano
rolls and well as 78 and Edison records, but I don't seem to have any
such in my collection, with the exception of very popular tunes like
Cole Porter's "Let's Misbehave".
For example, was the Harry Ruby tune, "Where do they go when they row,
row, row," ever cut as a piano roll? Any suggestions, particularly of
novelty tunes but also songs of the temperance movement would be most
appreciated.
