Steck Pianola Key Lock

Susan Hayes asks whether she can get her keys to move on her new Steck
player piano. May I suggest that this piano is working correctly in
that the keys are balanced to rest 'front up' so will not move when the
player action operates.

Some people may like to rebalance the entire keyboard just to get the
key moving effect, but this is really misguided. Some pianos had keys
balanced to drop and it is this that has led to the mistaken impression
that all player pianos move their keys. Most people understand that
the action works better without key movement and so that is the way
things should be left.

So Susan, enjoy your piano and don't worry about moving keys.
