Hello again to the list, I have recently met a man named Tom Schiller,
who for nearly 35 years worked on the "Saturday Night Live" crew as
a writer and producer of short comedy films, etc. He also produced
nearly 500 commercials during his career. Mr. Schiller is also an avid
music fan, and happens to own an Ampico upright, which I am restoring
for him.
In 1984 he produced a movie called "Nothing Lasts Forever". It
starred several "Saturday Night Live" cast members as well as Zach
Galligan in one of his earliest films. The movie was apparently never
released on a commercial level, but has enjoyed cult success. A quick
Google search will give the premise of the movie, etc.
Early in the movie, at around 6 minutes in, there is a scene in
which Zach Galligan is pretending to play a piano at a concert venue.
The piano is a 9-foot Knabe concert grand Ampico! The piano is shown
briefly with the drawer out, etc. Since the film was made in 1984
I was hoping the owner of the piano might come forward or confirm that
he or she loaned it for production in the movie. I am sure these
9-foot Ampicos were made in very small numbers, so someone must still
know where it is.
I have searched the MMD Archives for a reference to this, so forgive
me if I missed it. Mr. Schiller was kind enough to give me a copy of
the movie, because of my interest in mechanical music.
The movie is scheduled to be shown on Turner Classic Movies on Saturday,
May 30, 2015, at 2 a.m. [Eastern Time]. I believe it may be shown other
times as well. Hope some of you can get a chance to see it.
