Silverfish Infestation in Piano Roll Collection
By Allen Ford
Hi All, In about 1968 I purchased my first Ampico grand and with it
came 250 rolls that had been stored in cardboard boxes in a garage.
The rolls had a silver fish infestation due to dampness and the insects
were eating the boxes (mainly) and labels for the glue that attached
the paper to the box and labels to box and roll.
I found an insect spray at my local hardware store that would treat
silverfish, among other critters. I sprayed all the boxes and rolls,
reassembling same (i.e. roll in the box) outside in my yard and stored
them in new cardboard boxes in my garage until the odor subsided and
then I moved them into the house.
I still have the rolls; they did not suffer from this treatment. As
I recall I used more insecticide on the boxes relative to the rolls and
allowed the all to sit open for the day to dry out before reassembling
same. I hope this information is of help to any and all.
