Hello MMD and my good friend Lelland Fletcher. You wrote to MMD
about repairs needed to your piano barrel [150330 MMDigest].
Perhaps you will find another barrel, but that's not too likely.
The alternative is to restore the barrel you have. The pins on
a barrel piano are rather sturdy steel and they don't usually need
much work. They are nothing like the small, brass pins in a barrel
organ or a Hicks barrel piano, which are often bent back, tipped
sideways, broken off or missing entirely.
The first step is to take a couple pictures of the barrel to show
exactly what the problem is. If you can send the pictures to me,
I'll share them with restorer Jeff Vincent so he can determine just
what might need to be done. Jeff has restored dozens of barrels,
most for organs but a few for pianos.
Since you are in the far south-west and we are almost in the far
north-east, it's probably not practical to send the barrel to Jeff.
But, after we figure out what to do, Jeff thinks he can put you in
touch with someone near you who can get your barrel back in shape.
Regards,

P.S.: By the way, in case we need to make a new barrel, do you have
a palm tree that is the correct diameter? Perhaps a Pinanga Pianista?
