The Musical Box Society of Great Britain, along with representatives
of the Mechanical Organ Owners Society, British Organ Grinders
Association and the City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society,
will be at Stow Maries WW1 Aerodrome, Essex, UK, for a family day of
fun and old-time entertainment on Saturday, 25th April 2015.
As well as the regular attractions of the site, visitors will have the
opportunity to see, hear and find out about a wide range of mechanical
musical instruments including period barrel and other hand cranked
organs, a street organ, a barrel piano, antique musical boxes and reed
organettes. These instruments will demonstrated and playing at
intervals throughout the day.
There will a presentation in the morning of music popular at the time
of the Great War, as played on mechanical instruments, providing an
authentic experience of hearing it exactly as it would have been heard
a hundred years ago. Static displays will describe the history and
development of mechanical music over the centuries, including the
impact of the War on the industry, and the part played by mechanical
music for providing entertainment at that time.
Members of the public wishing to learn more about mechanical
instruments of their own are invited to "Ask the Experts."
As a unique tribute to those who served in the defence of Britain, and
to mark the Queen's (unofficial) birthday, the wedding anniversary of
the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and the anticipated royal birth, the
British National Anthem will be played on several mechanical musical
instruments in succession, thought to be a first of its kind.
Public admission charges apply. For further information:
