FS: Welte Pipe Organ Roll Changer
By Dick Hack
For sale: Welte 10-roll changer formerly installed at a pipe organ
installation in an auditorium in Kentucky. I overhauled the mechanics
of the roll changer about 20 years ago and it worked at that time,
although it has been idle for about 15 years.
It turned out to be too large for the use I intended. I modified it
to play 75-note Welte Orchestrion rolls so the original spools were cut
down and the electrical pneumatic-to-electric contact unit was rewired
for that purpose.
The changer can be made to work for any roll that is spooled in the
conventional direction by making 10 new take-up spools sized to the
desired roll width, and by making the proper tracker bar and mounting
it on the carriage. It could also be converted back to play the very
wide Welte Pipe Organ rolls. It includes the original "tablet" with
walnut base (the remote control switch and light assembly that can
select any individual roll, like a jukebox), and the vacuum pump and
motor unit.
It also includes a rather high current 12-volt power supply that
powered the electromagnets in our orchestrion. The changer is not in
a case and probably never had one in its original installation. I had
intended to build a matching case to the orchestrion.
The price is $2500. I have quite a bit more than that in the project
but I need to make space in the shop! If you are interested, please
call me first for more details before making a decision. Email me and
I will email you my phone number which is also in the MBSI and AMICA
directories. I can supply additional pictures on request.
Thank you.
