I've had tremendous response to my request for the tempo marked on this
roll. Thanks to everyone who responded. Your support is very much
appreciated.
Ed Gaida, who bought out the Custom Music Roll business from Janet and
Richard Tonnesen, phoned me to give the information he had. The roll
was perforated by Custom Music Rolls. His file has the tempo marked
as 65.
Once all the responses came in from others, all claiming their copy
was marked "67", it jogged my memory. Indeed, we initially were going
to mark the rolls at Tempo 65, but after repeated playings, we thought
it needed to be just slightly faster. Thus we marked the roll at 67.
I cannot explain why we just didn't mark it at 70. I guess we were
really being picky.
Editing and proofing was done on two pianos. One was an Ampico A and
the other was an Ampico B, but both pianos were equipped with "B"
drawers. Very precise tempo setting is possible on the "B" drawer.
In any event, I have made the recordings today with the Tempo at about
Tempo 67-70 on an Ampico "A" with an "A" drawer. The tempo levers
really can't be that precise because of the lost motion in the linkage.
Arpin was without equal.

[ I found a data file of this performance from Rob DeLand, dated
[ May 20, 1992, with Ampico coding. An accompanying remark says
[ the elapsed time from first note on until the last note goes off
[ should be 5 minutes 54 seconds. -- Robbie
