After reading Andrew Szymanski's post in MMD 15.02.14, I decided to
research this topic in the MMD archives. Nine articles over the last
fifteen years have been posted. Even though the Soloist isn't a hot
button issue, it did get my attention.
Andrew should have no problem in finding someone in the optical roll
scanning community to very accurately scan his scarce rolls. Due to
the fact that so few of these rolls exist, it should get high priority.
Fortunately the format of the Soloist rolls is compatible with most
rolls scanners. What becomes of the data once the rolls are scanned
is another issue. It will be hard to find enough people wanting
recuts to justify a normal production run. Julian Dyer has been known
to make small runs. Also, the MIDI files of the scan are not of much
value unless the tracker scale is known.
Even though Andrew expressed reluctance to modify his rare Kimball
organ, the addition of a MIDI device really does not destroy the
organ's originality. Done properly, MIDI can be added in parallel
with, and not replacing anything, on the organ relay or console in a
fully reversible manner. By that I mean it can be disconnected at any
time with no trace.
To my knowledge, the tracker scale for the Soloist has not been
published in a wide spread manner. I would love to have more
information of that scale and how the player mechanism functions.
Please keep us posted, and good luck.
