Recutting Rolls by Amy Beach & Chas. W. Cadman
By Philip Carli

I have two Ampico rolls that might be of interest for generating
recuts:

5431, "La Fee de la fontaine", from "Les reves de Columbine" by
Amy Beach, op. 65 no. 1, played by Augusta Schnabel Tollefsen; and

5331, the second movement of the Piano Sonata by Charles Wakefield
Cadman, op. 58, played by Earle Douglass Laros.

Both rolls are in good order with some repairs (the chain perfs are
always a problem) but they are 'teens copies on the rather high acid
paper Ampico used for a while and I hesitate to play them. They're
the only Ampico rolls of piano solo music by either Beach or Cadman,
both important American composers that I am personally quite fond of,
and I believe they are rare. (They are also rare Ampico performances
by their artists as well.)

I know this is a pricey business, but I wondered how to go about
possibly getting together subscribers for, and finding someone willing
to perforate, a short run of these rolls. This is also possibly very
naive of me, as I know the trend is toward scanning rolls and MIDI
playback, but I would prefer to stay original if possible as I cannot
afford to convert my instrument over. Allowing for my naivete, I would
appreciate any feedback on this idea. Many thanks to all.

Philip Carli
