Ampico Reroll & Sustain Pedal Problems
By David Dewey

Back at my friend's Mediterranean style Chickering grand Ampico
grand, it has recently decided to play on Rewind. Since I didn't
do the rebuild, I'm having a difficult time tracing the tubing to
figure out what has changed, other than looking for loose tubes.

In Rewind, there is an independent valve that is screwed to the rim
near the main pump with three tubes into it: the pouch, and then two
others -- one goes to the top of what I think is the distribution
box, and of course I can't see what's up there to see if anything
corresponds with the diagrams I have. On Rewind, this valve "leaks"
audibly. Might this be a clue?

Another issue is the damper lift: it doesn't lift, in Ampico or
88-note mode.

My initial job was to fix the Tempo, as it played way to slow.
I discovered the Tempo slider was hanging. After much effort, we
opened the drawer enough to lift out the roll motor regulator. I found
the tempo slot inside was made of a clear plastic, glued and tacked at
the four corners with copper brads. It had warped and cracked and
curled and was slowly digging through the sliders leather facing.

I made a new plastic piece and glued and tacked it in, new leather on
the slider, and voila, smoooooth, and I was able to adjust the Tempo
easily. Making that tapered "trumpet shaped" hole had me worried, but
it worked out just fine. I am assuming the plastic piece was original
to the unit, although I haven't seen such an arrangement before.

Hope y'all can give me some ideas of what may be amiss inside!
