Mason & Hamlin Red Welte Piano Serial Numbers
By John McClelland
I spoke with Bill Koenigsberg regarding the provenance of my Mason &
Hamlin Red Welte upright. Yes, the serial numbers (?) on the plate
don't make much sense. I did, however, find a M&H factory serial
number on the piano, stamped in the center of the underside of the
keybed. It is a 5-digit number and indicates that my piano was made
in 1913; when checked against the Pierce Piano Atlas. There was also
a case style number a little further inboard of the serial number.
I would be very interested to hear from other M&H Red Welte upright
owners with their serial and case style numbers. I am still digging
into finding the shipping registers for these pianos and will gladly
share the information, including date of shipment and original
purchaser, once I complete the hunt.
Send those numbers!
