Removing Duo-Art Temponamic Knob Shaft
By John Phillips

Hello MMD. I have moved on from the steamboat pump and now am worrying
about the Temponamic control in my Steck upright D-A. I have begun to
clean up the array of rods and levers that are on the underside of the
keybed, and these of course include the Temponamic control.

Ideally, I would like to take the control and its associated rods
and levers out of the piano and give them all a clean and polish, but
I can't get the knob off its shaft. The aperture in the keyslip is not
wide enough to let the knob pass inwards, nor will the array of bits
attached to the Temponamic shaft allow it to pass outwards. The knob
does not seem to be attached to the shaft by means of a screw.

I gripped the knob with a set of padded multigrips and the shaft with
some padded pliers and exerted as much torque as I could muster --
nothing happened. I wondered if the knob and shaft were joined by
a left handed screw thread, and tried twisting the other way. Again,
nothing happened. I have polished everything in situ, but that's not as
good as giving everything a good clean-up on the bench. Does anybody
have any advice?
