A possible source is to contact local organ technicians who may have
replaced large numbers of solenoid pipe valves and kept the old units.
There seems to be ongoing demand for Wicks units on eBay. Salvaged
solenoids can be found at various electronic supply companies that
deal in manufacturer over-runs or striped from used equipment. These
can be easily adapted by fastening a leather pad to the portion of the
solenoid that lifts when energized.
Some thought must be exercised in the selection of pull type solenoids
so that amperage placed on the MIDI output system will not be exceeded.
Care must also be exercised that the MIDI output system can accept
the reverse EMF which results when the current is withdrawn from the
solenoid coil. If it cannot, then a diode must be placed across the
coil leads.
