Dear MMDers, In the 141002 MMDigest, under the topic of MDF usage in
players and organs, Roger Wiegand states:
"All that said, there's still nothing wrong with the traditional
solution of solid wood boards glued together into a panel with some
nice newspaper or wallpaper applied to it using hot hide glue.
It will be lighter and stronger than any sheet product, and the
newspaper provides interesting reading to the next guy who opens up
the reservoir!"
I got a laugh out of this description! When I was restoring our 81-key
WBS organ in the mid 1980s, inside the pump I found the boards covered
with sheets of Dutch newspaper. Most of it was stock quotes and other
business news but there was an advertisement with Dutch text announcing
the movie "Roman Holiday", with pictures. I had information that the
last person to work on the organ was Henk Mohlmann in the early 1950s,
and with "Roman Holiday" coming out in 1953, this gave me another data
point confirming this.
So, my comment is that if you are going to glue newspaper to the inside
of your pump boards, be kind to future generations and include sheets
with dates on them!
Cheers,
